今日は、ものつくり大学卒業式に参加。左官のことを深く学びたいという思いから通うことにした大学院だが、２年間というのはあっという間の時間であった。何か深いことを学べたかというとよくわからないのだが、少なくとも建築における左官のさまざまな仕上げについては、理解することができたと考えている。そしてもう一つ大きな変化は、学んだことを次は学生たちに引き継ぐ役割をお受けしたということである。つまり4月1日からは、ものつくり大学の准教授として学生の指導を行うこととなったのである。主に、技能者の教育を行うことが役割であるが、技能とデザインと経営を身につけることができるような実践をしていければと考えている。そしてもう一つ、4月からは東京大学の博士後期過程にも通わせていただくこととなった。ここでは左官の研究を継続する予定だ。
Today I attended the graduation ceremony at Monozukuri University. I decided to attend graduate school because I wanted to learn more about plastering, and the two years flew by. I’m not sure if I learned anything particularly profound, but I think I’ve at least gained an understanding of the various plastering finishes used in architecture. Another big change is that I’ve taken on the role of passing on what I’ve learned to students. In other words, from April 1st I will be an associate professor at Monozukuri University, guiding students. My role will mainly be to educate skilled workers, and I hope to provide practical training that will enable them to acquire skills, design, and management. Also, from April I will be enrolled in the doctoral program at the University of Tokyo. There I plan to continue my research on plastering.
若い頃に石山修武という建築家の指導を受けて、工務店機能を兼ね備える設計事務所・ますいいリビングカンパニーを設立した。それから26年、建築の業界は大きく変化した。昔は建築学科は理工学部一番の花形だった。それが今では・・・設計や施工管理の人材は不足し、少ない大卒の奪い合い状態だ。技能者に関しては、夢を持ってこの業界に入職する若者の数は減り、外国人労働者に頼って存続するしかない今がある。僕はますいいリビングカンパニーも、そして業界全体も、次の世代が活躍するためには、今の若者たちが設計や、施工管理や、技能者として、この業界を選択してくれるような仕組みが必要だと考えている。つまりはみんなが活躍できて、職業を通した自己実現欲求を満たすことができる社会である。そして、AIが進化する今こそ、技能者こそがもう一度見直される生き方であると考えている。僕はますいいリビングカンパニーが良い建築を作るために、良い材料、良い職人、そして良い設計のトライアングルを目指して経営をしている。そのどれが欠けても、建築は成り立たないからである。良い建築を作ることができる状態を少しでも持続するために、力不足かもしれないけれど、貢献できればと思う。
In my youth, I received guidance from an architect named Osamu Ishiyama and established Masui Living Company, a design office that also functions as a construction company. Twenty-six years have passed since then, and the construction industry has changed dramatically. Architecture used to be the most prestigious field in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Now, however… there’s a shortage of design and construction management personnel, leading to fierce competition for the limited number of university graduates. As for skilled workers, the number of young people entering this industry with dreams has decreased, and the industry is now forced to rely on foreign workers to survive. I believe that for the construction industry to continue, a system is needed that encourages young people today to choose this industry as designers, construction managers, or skilled workers. In other words, a society where everyone can thrive and fulfill their desire for self-realization through their work. And now, with the advancement of AI, I believe that being a skilled worker is a way of life that deserves to be re-evaluated.I manage Masu-i Living Company with the goal of creating good architecture by striving for a triangle of good materials, good craftsmanship, and good design. Because if any of these are missing, architecture cannot exist. I hope to contribute, however little I may be, to sustaining the ability to create good architecture.
